Fault lines in the ecology
When U.S. medical students graduate, they are insufficiently grounded in any particular sphere of Medicine. The residency is supposed to give them the experience and training that allows them to pass specialized examinations, and serve the public as independent practitioners. Residencies, however, are not immune from external influences, technological, political or otherwise. In reading the following points, consider that formal anatomical pathology training has remained at 18-24 months for decades, despite continuing increases in knowledge and the emergence of new and indispensable fields (such as molecular pathology) atop the old order.
